This week’s one-off activity 

We have had a mixture of weather this week – sometimes bitterly cold, sometimes mild and sunny.  At the beginning of the week, when it was very cold, some of the children noticed that some ice had formed on the crates in Robin Garden. They carefully transported the ice to the blue play area – this became the road.  They collected soil and placed it on top of the ice.  They explained that they were the ‘grit-makers’ and the soil was the grit.  They continued by placing a piece of wooden ‘road’ over the top.  This meant that it was now safe to drive on, so they found their scooters and bikes and went safely over the road.  This activity lasted for around half an hour.

It promoted lots of lovely language, including new words and the children explored concepts from their own experiences, such as going out in the car on an icy road. Learning about cause and effect and how one substance can react with another, ie the soil (or grit) made the ice melt. They considered the important role that gritting lorries and their drivers do to keep us safe on the roads.

By reliving real life experiences through their play, they are making sense of the world. They are learning about health and safety, cause and effect, teamwork, developing new language and, vitally all through self-directed and initiated play. Fabulous.
