This week’s ‘one-off’ activity summary

Over the last few weeks each child has created their very own Christmas ‘card’. They each chose their own design and what resources they wanted to use.  Each card is therefore as individual as each child – it may not look particularly Christmassy in the traditional sense, but your child has created their very own interpretation of the festive season.

Having made their Christmas cards, the team talked to them about how the card could get to their families at home.  This led to discussion around the postal service.  Children thought about how they could protect their card by putting it in an envelope. They then learnt that it needed their address on it, so that the postal service would know where to deliver it.  They then considered who pays for it to be posted and how?  Learning that to be able to send it through the post it needs to have a stamp applied to the envelope.  All things we take for granted.  To further develop their understanding, some of the children put on their high vis jackets and walked up to the postbox near to the school.  One child commented excitedly as she saw the postbox “Oh my country has a postbox”. Lovely! Luckily, the postbox was just about to be emptied by the Postman (it was a man!).  He put their cards in his sack and even allowed them to help him lock the postbox once it was empty. One of the children told everyone “the post is going to the post office and then it will be delivered to our houses”. Having real-life hands on experiences gives children a far greater knowledge and understanding of their world than sitting at a desk and being told about it.

Please keep an eye out for your delivery and tell your child how special and unique their Christmas card is.  There will not be another like it anywhere in the world.
