Making potato salad

The children helped to harvest some of our potatoes that have been growing in our allotment garden.  This has been a long-term project, with the children planting them as seed potatoes, watching them grow over several weeks and finally being able to harvest them.  The children noticed that the soil was very dry. This led to discussion around the weather, how the very dry summer is impacting on the soil, the plants and wildlife and how we need to be careful with our use of water to make sure that it doesn’t run out.  This led to further discussion around how we can stay safe in the sun and the very warm weather we are experiencing.  As the children were using tools, they thought about how they should use them safely to avoid hurting themselves or anyone else.  The children helped count the potatoes to see how many we had grown – 25 in total – not bad!  The children were asked what we could make with the potatoes.  Interestingly, the children didn’t really know what you can do with potatoes. This led to discussion around all the ways potatoes can be cooked.  As it is the summer, the teacher suggested making a potato salad.  The children carefully washed the potatoes, learning why this is important. They then used our safety knives to chop them up.  Again, learning about using tools safely.  The other ingredients that were added were mayonnaise and chives.  The chives were also from our allotment garden. They helped to snip them into the mixture before stirring it all together.  They then went on to taste what they had harvested and cooked.  Lots of lovely learning in this activity, as well as having some yummy potato salad to try.

Sports Day

On Tuesday morning we held our first Sports Day event in two years.  It was great to see the children taking part in the races, sitting beautifully whilst waiting their turn, listening and following instructions about when to stand up and what to do and to really getting into the spirit of the races, whether they were first or last. The taking part, being with their peers and seeing their families at a large event made it really special and we hope that you all enjoyed it too.  If anyone has any photos of the day that they are happy to share, we should be grateful if you could send some in by email to office@anthonyropernursery.co.uk, as we were too busy to take any ourselves.
