This week’s activities
Practicing for Sports Day
The children are getting really skilled at the Sports Day races, from the tiny two year olds, to the competitive four year olds. They have been learning about patience – as they need to wait until it is their team’s turn to race; following instructions – they need to listen to the adults to know what to do and when to do it; fair play – as, whilst they may want to win, they may not always and this is ok; and, finally, being able to acknowledge other’s achievements and being happy and supportive of them. They have also been thinking about the physical effects of exercise on their body – their heart beats faster and their breath speeds up. We teach them that this is a good feeling. Being out of breath is necessary for children’s physical wellbeing every day. Ensuring that they get enough physical exercise is part of what we do day-in-day out at Pre-school, but Sports Day helps to focus the children’s minds about why it is important.
Making sensory playdough
We have playdough for the majority of the week. The children often help to make it, learning how much of each ingredient is needed to make it just the right consistency; learning about measurements and cause and effect of one ingredient on another. To add an additional dimension, we have utilised some of the wonderful lavender that is now in full flower at the moment to enhance their sensory experience. Playdough has so many benefits; physical – great for strengthening hand and finger muscles; creative – it can become anything, from a pie to a superhero; sensory – touch and, in this case, smell and, especially with the enrichment of the lavender, calming and relaxing.
As always, there are some photos on our website, www.anthonyroperpreschool.co.uk, or our Facebook page.
Thank you.
