This week’s activities

Alongside the usual activities, this week the children celebrated two occasions:

Pancake Day – to celebrate Shrove Tuesday, the children made scrummy pancakes. They followed the recipe – learning about quantity, such as one egg, 500ml of milk, 500 grammes of flour. They explored what happens when different items are mixed together and what tools they need to use to make this happen.  They took turns to stir the mixture, waiting patiently until it was their go. They discussed keeping safe when cooking and that only an adult can use the oven and heat the pan. They used their senses to smell the pancakes and their taste buds to eat them; describing whether they liked them and what toppings they wanted. Finally, they talked about why we have Pancake Day.

World Book Day – we have celebrated World Book Day this week in the following ways:

As always, there has been reading, stories, nursery rhymes and songs.

Some of the children have brought in their favourite books from home – these have ranged from books about dinosaurs, princesses, witches, superheroes, monkeys, bears, whales, snails and Mr Men – to name but a few.

The children took part in a ‘book scavenger hunt’. As the story was being read, they looked to see if any of the characters on their sheet were in the book. They then marked them off as they found them.

On their trip to the woodland area this morning, they re-enacted the ever popular, ‘Three Little Pigs’ story. They talked about what the pigs needed to build their homes and whether they could find any in the woods.  They only managed to find sticks, which they counted into piles. The wooden house became the home of the pigs, as the big bad wolf came knocking on the door, with the children using the repeated refrains from the story.

Reading to children is a wonderful thing to do. The earlier you start, the greater the joy they will get from books and reading as they move through life.  The type of book isn’t important; the act of reading and sharing a special time with family and friends is what is at the heart of World Book Day.
