Refreshing our scarecrow

As promised last week, we have begun the process of retiring our old scarecrow, Mr Chips, and the children have wished him a fond farewell.  As they were moving Mr Chips, they noticed a snail slithering along his trouser leg.  One of the children commented about the snail “it goes outside.  They can find leaves”.  Another child said “because they wanted to snail around”.  Someone else suggested that “they do playing”.  The children carefully transferred the snail to our garden so he was safe.

When thinking about the old Mr Chips, one of the children described him as having a “spooky face”.  Having dealt with Mr Chips and the snail, the children began the creative process for the new one by planning what they should look like.  “We need a pumpkin face” one of the children suggested, whilst another said “we need earrings”.  They worked collaboratively to draw a representation of how they want the scarecrow to look.  The next phase was to choose the clothes that the scarecrow will be wearing and putting these in the right places to create a person shaped model.  From next week, they will begin the process of stuffing the scarecrow with straw so that they are transformed from a flat 2D shape to a filled out 3D shape. When asked to think why we needed a scarecrow for our allotment garden, one child said “to scare birds away from eating our plants” and another suggested that “the birds will be very scared”.  How lovely.
