Water wall

If you drop your child off from Robin Garden, you may have noticed our new ‘water wall’. As with anything new in the environment, the children have been very keen to explore what it can do. Children generally love playing in water but our new water wall has lots of parts that require the children to consider how they work. For example, to get the water from the large box through the pipes and out into one of the smaller boxes, the children need to think about how they can make this happen. By using the lever and pumping it, they can watch as the water is forced up the pipes and, if they keep pumping it, is forced through the pipes and down into the box. This leads to conversations around force – the energy required to move the water through the pipes, and gravity – the natural way that things get to the ground if they aren’t trying to go uphill. Alongside these scientific explorations, they learn to take turns and share, engage in physical activity that promotes the use of fine and large motor skills and consider how we can play with water, but waste as little as possible, by re-using what comes out of the pipes, over and over. However, the main thing is, it is such good fun!

Exploring a typewriter

We are really lucky to have been donated a wonderful, rather old, typewriter. This has been placed in our environment, along with some blank paper and we have left the children to explore it on their own, initially. Interestingly, the children soon realised that it could make marks but that they needed to feed paper into it. Whilst they are all very familiar with computers, tablets, laptops and phones, it was lovely to see how they can work out how to use much older technology. There was lots of lovely problem solving happening here, together with turn-taking, collaboration and discussion. Super.
