This week’s activities

This week we saw how the weather has drastically changed and this was something that sparked an interest with the children, it lead to lots of lovely conversations about topics such as the changing seasons, what we need to wear now the weather has changed, with one child adding “it’s not sunny anymore, we don’t need to wear the suncream” and another “we need our waterproofs!”. We then took part in an activity all about why it rains. The children started off by having a look out the window watching it rain really hard, one of the children told us “when there’s dripping on the ceiling at my house we put a bucket there to catch it” so we decided to put a cup outside to see how much rain we could catch. We then came back inside and had a look in a weather book discussing why it rains and we found out that when the clouds take up so much moisture from down here, they get so full and dark, they can’t hold the water anymore. They then let it all go, making it rain. So we tried this for ourselves on a much smaller scale, using shaving foam, water and food colouring. First the children filled up their cups half way with some water, we then added some shaving foam on top to represent our clouds. The children then used pipettes to squeeze coloured water on top of their clouds (foam) and watched as they got heavier, the coloured water seeped through and that made our rain!

Mark making is a very popular choice for most at preschool with the craft area always being in use, even what we think is a scribble is a good start towards writing readiness. This week we have been using the children’s interest in mark making to help build their pre-writing skills such as coordinating their hand movements with their visual perceptions as this will support them having more control using a pen or pencil. We did this by taping some string down onto the floor and the children pushed cars along, following the pattern from left to right. The lines were all made differently to represent those from different letters such as horizontal, circular, diagonal, also providing the children with a more multisensory activity rather than just pen and paper.
