Colour matching

To make learning about colours fun, one of the teachers made a ‘colour train’. Each carriage was a different colour. She then challenged the children to find something in the room to match the coloured carriage. The children worked collaboratively to find the right coloured item for each carriage, taking turns and cheering each other on as they found something that matched. They then counted how many items they had found in each colour – there were lots! Once they had finished they worked together to put everything back in its correct place. Putting resources away when you have finished with them, so they are ready for the next person to play with, is one of our Golden Rules. This helped the children understand why it is important and how, if they work together, they can get it done more quickly.

A walk through Eynsford

A small group of children went on a walk to explore the local area. The teachers prepared them for their walk, explaining that they needed to wear a sunhat, as it was a sunny day, a high visibility jacket, so that they could be seen by cars, and that they needed to switch on their listening ears to follow the instructions of the teachers. To get to the other side of the main road, they went to the zebra crossing, as this was a safe place to cross. They stopped, looked and listened, before waiting for the teachers to tell them it was safe to cross. As they walked along, they noticed the numbers on the houses. One house had a sign with a dog on. They carried on along the road until they reached some of the local businesses. One of them, an estate agents, had photos of houses. The children learnt that you can buy and sell houses and that they cost lots and lots of money. The next shop they came to was the butchers shop. The children looked into the window at all the food for sale. One of the children commented “the man is making dinner in the shop”. One of the butchers kindly invited the children into the shop to see what they could see for sale. One child noticed eggs, another cakes and one commented “trees” referring to the parsley garnish. Further along the road, they came across the old water fountain – this no longer works and is planted with flowers. One of the children commented “that used to have water in it to drink”. They finished their walk at the park. They took turns on the swings, went up and down on the seesaw and clambered up the climbing frame and down the slide. They then took the same route back to the Pre-school. What fun!
