Produce from our allotment

Over the last couple of weeks we have been harvesting the few vegetables that have survived what has been challenging growing conditions for our allotment.  The children have harvested onions, rhubarb, broad beans, carrots and some flowers.

The children were able to discover the properties of the onions for themselves once they had been pulled up. They noticed the shape of the bulb and the strong smell.  They used our safety knives to chop the onions up. They noticed that, as they chopped them, the smell got stronger and that it could even make their eyes water!.  They looked inside the chopped onions and noticed the layers that were packed in together to form the spherical shape of the onion.

This week we had a ‘shop’ to sell some of the produce (sadly there wasn’t very much this year).  This helps the children understand simple economics, ie we produce goods, which are then sold for money.  Sadly, on this occasion, no-one felt able to buy anything.
