We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!

Each week, we have a ‘core’ book in each room.  These core books are familiar stories to the majority of the children.  They usually have a repeated refrain and often rhyme.  This makes them enjoyable for not only the children, but for the adult who is reading them.  One of the very popular story books is ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’.  This is so familiar, that the adults don’t need a book to tell the story!  Once the teacher had read the book to the children, she asked them to think about how it might feel to go on a bear hunt.  The children discussed how they can feel things inside their bodies, such as emotions, and they can feel things with their hands.  The teacher then asked them to think about what they can feel with their feet. The teacher had set out trays with resources representing each of the places the characters in the story went on their search for the bear, such as ‘mud, thick oozy mud’ or ‘splishy splashy water’.  The children took off their shoes and socks and eagerly felt the different materials  with their feet.  They were encouraged to use a variety of words to describe their experiences in each tray.  They also helped each other in and out of each tray and worked collaboratively to continue the story and to think about what might happen next after they had completed the bear hunt – was the bear friendly and just wanted to play, or was he hungry? Where did the bear go next?  Wonderful!
