This week’s activity

Fireworks and Bonfire Night

We like to explore, discuss and acknowledge what happens in the children’s lives outside of the Pre-school. At this time of year, many of the children have been to firework displays or, even if they haven’t been to one, will have seen and heard fireworks. One of the teachers used these experiences as a starting point for discussion. When she asked why we have fireworks, one of the children said “because of the man”. They went on to discuss what they had seen and heard with one child saying “they were very loud and my dog didn’t like them” and another said “the colours were everywhere and it was loud, like this …..BANG!”.

They next decided that they would create artworks based on their interpretation of what they had seen, using different methods; one was using toilet rolls with slits cut in to print the paint and the second was using large motor skills outside to “splat” paint onto the large paper. Once they had finished, one of the children said “that looks like

the fizzy fireworks”.
