We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!

The children love to hear stories that they are familiar with and they love joining in with repeated refrains. ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt!’ is a classic for a reason. To extend the story and really get the children involved in the telling, one of the teachers set up a tuff tray and told the children that they were going to make all of the areas that the characters visit on their journey to see the ‘Bear’. First of all, they looked through the book to see where the characters go, thinking about what they could use from our resources to represent each environment. They chose grass, blue paper for the river, adding some water to dirt to make mud, leaves and sticks to represent the forest and cotton wool for snow. Finally, they used a box to be the Bear’s cave. They then placed the resources in sequence in the tuff tray, according to the book. It was then time for them to re-enact the story using some small world figures for the family and a toy bear to hide in the cave. Finally, the children acted out the story, joining in with the repeated refrains.

Bringing stories to life using props and repetitive refrains helps children with their communication and language and literacy skills, as well as being great fun!
