This week’s activities
Exploring our senses
The children were thinking about their senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. One of the children commented “we touch with our hands”. The teacher asked if they could use any other parts of their body to experience the sense of touch. They weren’t sure, so they tried an experiment. What if they could use their feet to touch?
First of all they took off their shoes and socks. A tray of red and blue paint and some large pieces of paper were placed on the floor. The children took it in turns to walk in the paint, mixing it with their bare feet, before walking across the paper. The children noticed that by mixing the paint together, they created a new colour, purple! They noticed how the paint left their foot prints behind as they walked across the paper and how they could use their feet to make different marks. They discovered that not only can they experience the sense of touch with their hands but with their feet. In fact any external part of their body experiences the sense of touch.
They also talked about the sense of smell. Some of them really didn’t like the smell of the paint.
Once they had finished, they were encouraged to wash their feet by themselves, helping each other and displaying some great teamwork. They then put on their own socks and shoes, helping them develop those essential self-help skills.
We hope you have a lovely weekend.
