This week’s activity

Making robots

Last week, some of the children were read the story “Harry and the Robot”.  One of the children requested that they make their own robots.  As it was nearly home time, the teacher explained that there wasn’t time that day but that they would be able to make some the following week.

First of all they looked at the resources we had available in our craft area.  They decided that they would use the boxes and tubes we collect to form the main structure.  They considered how they could attach these items, agreeing that sellotape would be good.  Once they had made their main structure, they chose other materials to embellish them, such as paint, foil, pen and stickers.

One of the children had used two different sized tubes for legs.  She noticed that her robot wouldn’t stand up.  When asked why she thought that might be, she decided that it was because one leg was shorter than the other (mathematical concepts and problem solving).  This led to discussion around sizes, how many legs were needed and how to make the robots balance and stand up.  There was also some debate around how to attach the head so that it didn’t wobble!
