This week’s activity

Our allotment garden

Hopefully you will have noticed the flourishing of our allotment garden.  There are onions, rhubarb, potatoes, fennel, mint, lemon balm, to name a few.  We also have a wonderful strawberry patch.  Over recent weeks, the children have been looking at the allotment and noticing the changes that are happening over time.  This week, they noticed that some of the strawberries had changed from green to a lovely red colour.  They learnt that this meant that, if they were red all over, they were ready to be harvested.  They chose the juiciest, ripest strawberries and carefully picked them.  They then washed them to get rid of any dirt/insects – we don’t use any chemicals on our allotment, so all of our produce is organic.  Once the strawberries were washed , they got to taste them.

To ensure that our remaining strawberries are well taken care of, the children helped to put straw around the base of the plants.  This helps to slow down the snails and other garden inhabitants who also like to eat our yummy strawberries.
