A visitor to Robin Garden

Earlier this week, we were lucky enough to be visited by a lizard in Robin Garden.  We have never seen a lizard at Pre-school before, so this was very exciting.  The lizard had appeared on the blue area of Robin Garden.  The children decided that that wasn’t a very safe place for them.  One of the teachers carefully encouraged him into a box so they could be moved.  Before releasing them into our wildlife area, the children got to have a quick look at them inside the box.  They noticed that their tale was missing.  The teacher explained that this is something that the lizard does to protect themselves from danger, such as if they were picked up by a bird.  Amazingly, they are able to grow their tale back. Wow! The children helped to carefully release the lizard back into the wild. The teacher told the children that she wasn’t sure what kind of lizard it was but that she would find out and tell them the next day.  She discovered that there are 3 native species of lizard in the UK; the Common LIzard, the Sand Lizard and the Slow Worm (not actually a worm but a lizard).  The one who had visited our garden was a ‘Common Lizard’.  How lucky we are to be able to share such wonderful experiences with the children, helping them foster a caring, nurturing attitude to the natural world.
