Corn on the cob

We had a visit from Eynsford in Bloom this week. They came to tidy-up our allotment and get it ready for the winter. Whilst they were tidying, they dug up some lovely potatoes. We will be using these in our cooking activities over the coming weeks. They also pulled up the corn plants, some of which have grown cobs. The children explored the plants, looking for the corn, which was hidden in some leaves. Once they had found the corn, they unwrapped it from it’s outer leaves and explored what it looked like. Some of the children noticed that it looked a bit different to the sweetcorn they have at home – not quite as yellow. They also noticed that it was hard. The teacher explained that this corn was no longer any good for us to eat as it was too old and hard. However, they thought about what they could use it for and after some discussion, it was agreed that the corn could be put out in the garden for the birds to eat. Lovely. The remaining parts of the plant are going into our large green compost bin, ready to rot down to make nice healthy soil for our plants to grow next season.
