The last of our produce

Our allotment garden has produced some lovely food stuffs over the year but we are now coming to the end of what we can pick and eat. We had some cucumber plants that produced cucumbers but they are now going over to seed. The same with our tomato plants. Whilst we could not pick these and eat them at snack time, we didn’t waste them. The children collected them from the plants and used them in an activity around the life cycle of plants. First of all they compared them to shop-bought cucumber and tomatoes that we had in the fridge. They noticed that the tomatoes were very red but were beginning to split. The cucumbers were much bigger than the shop-bought one and they were going yellow. They also had bumps on the outside. Next they cut them up to see what was inside. They saw that both the cucumber and the tomatoes had seeds inside. The teacher explained the life cycle of the plants. How the tomato and cucumber had once grown from tiny seeds, become seedlings, then plants, the plants had produced flowers and these eventually turned into fruits. These fruits grew and ripened and then the ones that we didn’t pick grew too big or too ripe to eat. These in turn will rot down and go into the soil where they will become part of the next cycle.
