Activities

We continue to settle the new children into the setting, with many of them being away from home/family for the first time, this can be a difficult transition. Their keyperson is there to help with this transition and to offer them a secure base from which to explore what we have on offer, whilst knowing that someone is there to take care of their needs and offer a cuddle and reassurance. The returning children are remembering the routine of the setting and how we encourage independence and self-directed play, alongside adult initiated activities. One of the adult-initiated activities this week was based around the children’s classic book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. As the teacher read the book, the children created props to go with the story. They made a tiny egg on a leaf, various food items that the caterpillar munches through and the caterpillar as he grows bigger, until he builds a chrysallis around himself before turning into a butterfly. The children then used the props they had made to re-tell the story. Engaging in literacy activities is great for developing children’s language – it can extend their vocabulary, help them with their grammar and open up a world of imagination. By using props, especially those they have made themselves, the children become more engaged and retain the information they have learnt as they become active learners.
