This week’s activities
Singing Romanian songs and rhymes
We were really lucky to have one of our lovely mums come into the setting to share some of her families traditional songs and rhymes from Romania. The children were really engaged and sat and listened attentively. They then heard a version translated into English and did their best to join in. It was really lovely for the children to hear another language and to share in one of the children’s cultures. We should like to say a big thank you to the mum concerned. If anyone else would like to share a skill, a language, a musical instrument, or just to simply come in and spend some time with the children, please let us know. The children really enjoy it when someone new comes to the setting. Thank you.
Making fruit ‘pizza’
The teacher used the opportunity of making a healthy ‘pizza’ to discuss several topics. First of all, the children used a water melon to make the base of their pizza. Next they chose different fruit toppings. For some children, there was new fruit to try – kiwi and plums – they seemed to enjoy these. They used the children’s safety knives to cut up the fruit toppings, using their fine motor skills. Next they smelt and looked inside a bag of desicated coconut. They tried to guess what it could be. One suggestion was ‘cheese’, another was ‘rice’. Both good guesses. They then again used their fine motor skills to sprinkle the coconut on to the top of their pizza. During the activity they discussed the benefits of eating fruit and having a healthy diet. The teacher went on to explain that there are lots of health benefits to our bodies of eating fruit but explained that it has ‘fruit acids’ which are bad for our teeth. This led to discussion around dental hygiene and the importance of looking after their teeth. One child commented “I brush my teeth before I go to bed, so they are sparkly and clean”. Lovely!
There are photos on our website and Facebook page.
Thank you.
