This week’s activities
World Bee Day – Monday 20th May
We have been looking at bees over the past few weeks; talking about pollination, decline in numbers, how we can help by planting bee-friendly gardens, shallow water bowls with stones in for bees to stand on, collecting nectar/pollen, looking at videos of inside a hive, to name but a few. The teacher explained that there are many different bees, not just the ones we might know about, such as the honey bee. This led to them learning about a Carder bumble bee. To extend the activity, the children made wildflower bee bombs. These were made by mixing wildflower seeds, compost and water. These were then given to the children to take home to use in their own gardens. We also used them in our own garden. Finally, the teacher explained how we could help tired bees (with the help of an adult) by giving them sugar dissolved in water on a spoon.
We would love you to share any photos you have of your children looking at their own gardens, noticing bees and other pollinators, things that you might do to help our natural world. If you do have any, please forward them to the office@anthonyropernursery.co.uk email address and we will include them in our gardening journal. Thank you.
There are photos on our website and Facebook page.
Have a lovely half term break. Let’s hope for some sunny days!
Thank you.
