Education for Sustainable Development activity – water walk

Initially, the teacher engaged the children by talking about the various uses of water and how we are lucky to be able to get fresh running water from the tap. She went on to explain how some children/families in other parts of the world might not have access to fresh running water. They talked about how, if there aren’t taps in their homes, they have to get water from a tap in the road or even from a pond, which could have insects and germs in it. Some families even have to walk with containers for a long way to get fresh water, having to do this every day, sometimes more than once. To give some context to how long this takes, the teacher compared it to how long a day is at Pre-school. To help them gain some understanding of how challenging the walk could be, the children carried their containers over an obstacle course; not an easy thing to do. They then went on to observe water which had been poured onto the floor outside. They used chalk to draw around the puddle and watched as the sun made the water evaporate. Whatever water was left over was used to water the plants, helping the children understand the importance of not wasting this precious resource that we currently have in plentiful supply.
