Exploring emotions

It can sometimes be difficult to fully engage children in exploring theirs and others emotions. To make it fun, the teacher used balloons. She blew them up and then drew a range of different faces displaying different emotions, including happy, sad, cross, surprised and angry. As the children identified the emotions being drawn, she asked them if they could copy the faces. Most were able to demonstrate happy and sad faces. It is a big developmental step for children to begin to recognise their own and others emotions and we have to remember that they do not yet have the skills to self-regulate at times. This is something we help them to be able to do as they spend time at the Pre-school.

Fine motor skills

To make the most of the balloons, once the children had finished discussing the emotions shown on the faces, they turned the activity into a role play hairdressers. The teacher had attached paper ‘hair’ to the top of the balloons. The children carefully used scissors to give the balloons some very stylish haircuts. This was great for developing their fine motor skills, being able to use tools safely and handle things with care – scissors and balloons could have been a disaster – but all went well!
