Exploring our senses

This week we explored our five senses, touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing, through a variety of interactive activities. The children thought hard about how they use their senses, with one child commenting “I use my eyes when I’m playing Mario to see which way I need to go”. Another child said “I use my mouth to eat”. The teacher explained that we taste food when we eat with the taste buds all over our tongues. The children then took it in turns to wear a scarf over their eyes to give them a glimpse into how the world appears without sight. They discovered that they could use some of their other senses to find out about the world around them, including touch, smell and hearing. This led to lots of interesting conversations around the texture of the objects they could feel, where they discovered that there are often similarities to how things feel which can mean that, without being able to see them, it is hard to distinguish one item from another. They also thought about their sense of smell, noticing how some things smell really good and some really bad!

Erupting rainbow volcanoes

Children generally love messy play and experimenting. This week, they learnt how to create erupting rainbow volcanoes with a few simple ingredients and following the below steps:

Place empty cups on a tray.
Fill the cups half way up with lemon juice. Alternatively, white vinegar works just as well but doesn’t smell quite as nice!
Use a pipet to add a couple of drops of food colouring into the cup and give it a stir.
Add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda to each cup.
Wait excitedly for the chemical reaction as the volcanoes erupt and overflow.
Great fun but lots of simple science happening here. Introducing new vocabulary and concepts whilst making learning fun and interactive.
