Scarecrow making

In continuation from last weeks ‘harvest’ learning, the children had a look at the popular story book ‘The Scarecrows Wedding’. They discussed what scarecrows are used for and where we might find them, with one child adding “they scare away the birds” and the teacher then explaining that this is to protect the farmers crops as the birds like to eat them. So then we decided to create our own! The children went off and collected different craft materials such as paint and glue. They then worked together to decide what they should use to make the scarecrows’ eyes, hair, hands etc talking about the shape, size and colour of some of the things they needed, with one child suggesting we use bottle lids for the eyes because “they’re circles like mine”. Everyone seemed very pleased with our preschool scarecrow so hopefully we won’t have any birds eating from our lovely allotment!

Emotions and feelings

Since having lots of new children starting with us it can be hard when someone else wants what you want to play with and dealing with these different emotions can be challenging when you’re only tiny. This week we had a look at another lovely book ‘The Colour Monster’ and read about how his emotions were all mixed up and confused, then how his friend helped him sort them into jars. This led us onto our next activity, making our own Colour Monster and seeing the children working on strengthening the muscles in their hands using tweezers to sort all the items in the tray. They had to manoeuvre the tweezers to pick up the different sized items such as buttons, pompoms and beads as well as sorting them into the correct jars based on their colours, for example, yellow items in the ‘happiness’ jar and red items in the ‘anger’ jar. This activity sparked the children to speak to each other about what different feelings they have experienced, and supporting them to understand their own emotions as well as understanding others have those feelings too.
