Creating our own giant superhero!

This week, one of the children arrived wearing an Ironman costume. This led to discussion around what is special about Ironman, what his powers are and how he uses them to do good. Some of the children decided that they would like to create their very own Ironman. They thought about how they could go about this and, as they wanted it to be big, they chose a large cardboard box that they could spread out to make it flat and therefore big enough for them to create their ‘big’ Ironman representation. One of the children suggested drawing round a child so that they could have an outline of a body.to use as a template. However, they noticed that the whole of the child didn’t fit onto the cardboard, so they came up with a solution. They said that they could draw a head on some paper and stick that on. They also decided that Ironman needed shoes and, as these wouldn’t fit on the cardboard either, they could draw around their shoes, cut them out and stick those on too. They decided that they needed to paint Ironman to make him look like he is wearing his very special suit. As the children painted, they noticed that, as some of the paint mixed together, it changed colour. This led to them chatting about what happens when certain colours, such as red/yellow, blue/yellow and red/white, mix together. Other children came and joined in the activity and decided that they would like to make a friend for Ironman. This continued for some time. Lovely! All from one spark.

World of Work – Visit from a Nurse

We were really lucky that this week the children got to meet a real life nurse, who is one of the children’s mummys. She came dressed in her uniform and brought some outfits and equipment for the children to try out. She explained the different roles that people have in a hospital, such as doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist, midwife, health care assistant, porter, radiographer; to name but a few. The children listened carefully and loved trying out some of the equipment, learning new words, such as stethoscope, and hearing about what some of the procedures are, including a butterfly plaster and an x-ray. They enjoyed seeing one of their teachers dressed as a surgeon. and hearing about how the medical team need to wear special clothes, gloves, hats and face masks before they carry out operations to ensure that everything is clean and hygienic. She explained how all roles can be carried out by both genders and that doctors can be women and nurses can be men. What a fantastic opportunity for the children. We should like to say a BIG THANK YOU to Nikki for sparing the time to come in and share such a wonderful learning opportunity with the children.
