I know that there is a lot of pressure on children and parents to be ‘school ready’. At Anthony Roper Pre-school we prefer to focus on being ‘life ready’. There seems to be a rush to get children writing, especially writing their name.

A pre-school child’s hands are still developing and are not fully formed. This is why your child may not be ready to ‘write’. However, there are things that we can do to support this development. The main one being PLAY!! playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc.

All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready and will have benefited from all of the other activities that they have been able to enjoy and have fun with.
